If you've just been diagnosed with Type II diabetes, you're probably feeling an unsettling mixture of fear and apprehension. After all, Type II diabetes is associated with many adverse health risks, such as cardiovascular disease and stroke. The good news, however, is that if it's caught early enough, Type II diabetes is a controllable condition that doesn't have to make your existence miserable. With the right combination of dietary modifications, exercise, and medication, you'll be able to live a happy and productive life.

The following are three things you should do as soon as possible if your doctor has recently diagnosed you with this condition.

Enroll in a Diabetic Cooking Class

Now is the perfect time to enroll in a diabetic cooking class. Your local community college should have options, and even some upscale grocery stores are offering cooking classes geared toward various types of conditions. You'll learn how to prepare tasty yet healthy meals that are low in sugar and fat, and you'll probably meet new friends along the way and maybe even gain an informal support group. Even if cooking has never been your thing until now, you may be introduced to a fulfilling new hobby.

Evaluate Your Health Insurance Plan

Dealing with diabetes can be expensive — you may have to pay for diabetes related supplies such as test strips, glucose meters, and medications. Making sure your health care plan is up to the task may result in serious savings as well as provide you with a significant amount of peace of mind. If your current insurance doesn't already provide coverage for diabetes management courses and the services of a certified nutritionist, it's time to shop around for a plan that meets your needs.

Enroll in an Exercise Program

Physical exercise is one of the best ways to get Type II diabetes under control, so be sure to check out your local fitness center to see what they have to offer. Even mild exercise performed for 30 or so minutes three times per week can have positive benefits for those diagnosed with Type II diabetes. Because diabetes has become so prevalent among American citizens, many fitness centers have begun offering classes and programs specifically designed for the those with this condition. Please feel free to contact your local fitness center for more information on how the right exercise program can help reduce the symptoms of Type II diabetes.
